Metallica Metalluca

With this manga being canceled, I found it fitting to rewrite my review.

Metallica Metalluca had good promise. It never reached it's potential.

The art is what you'd expect from a shonen manga. Inventive monsters, nice background and good character design. It's nothing too beautiful, but it looks good.

The characters, although they might be a bit standard, are fun. Doesn't change the fact that it's still a goofy main characters, a sexy girl and a wimpy sidekick.

The story. Where to begin about the story. A boy with a dream, having to take an exam first. It's cliché. At first I thought it would pick up, get its own vibe and feel, and take its own course. It didn't. Cliché after cliché, the reason it got canceled. And it's too bad, because the main idea was a lot of fun: minerals with special powers, archeology etc. But the clichés, they killed it.

I'm sad to say, but: this manga sucks. Don't try it, there's no point.

Metallica Metalluca (or as I like to call it "The Thing That Should Not Be") is a shounen manga by amateur mangaka Teruaki Mizuno. It was the mangaka's first published work that he released in 2010. Usually, the debut work of an artist is their most important, since it can be very hard to Escape from a work if it turns out to be Some Kind of Monster. It can leave you Broken, Beat and Scarred both mentally and critically. Sadly, this is exactly what happened to Teruaki's debut manga, which ended up being like Cyanide to his career.

Now I'm not one to jump on a Hate Train when a work is largely disliked by the people who read it, but I hated this manga so much that I had to give it 2x4 ratings. What truly was the Fuel to me giving this manga No Remorse was that this, in my opinion, was a pathetic attempt to make a quick buck with a lousy shounen. Now with fairness And Justice To All, he might have just wanted to create something he really wanted, but The Struggle Within me really does not let me believe it. Shounen is a very easy genre to do, but one that's very hard to do well. It has a very clear template to follow but you can't only follow that template or else it'll become One of many uninspired shounen out there. Sadly, that's exactly what happened to this manga.

Alas, nothing in this manga could have been a Cure for lackluster characters, a redundant plot and an extremely Frantic ending. The Small Hours I wasted on reading this manga could have been used to Seek & Destroy my daily chores.

I really do think that if he would have put in a little more effort to this it could have turned out to be something other than me Wasting My Hate. I'd be lying if I said the idea of him having Death Magnetic abilities didn't seem interesting to me. After all, talent (or a lack of it) isn't Hardwired into our minds. But until The Day That Never Comes when he will pull together and make something decent, The Memory Remains of the Bad Seed that is Metallica Metalluca.

I liked the manga to be honest. I'm not the kinda guy to get that turned off of cliches. It looked like it had the potential to take off, but WSJ isn't exactly a place where sub-par manga gets a free ride.

In my honest opinion I think the author should start the manga from scratch with another publisher with new ideas. I think it was just a rookie mangaka who screwed up and needs a second chance. There was definitely potential in the manga, I think anyone could see that, but the cliches killed it before it had a chance to get going.

Like the others, I don't recommend reading it because there are just enough issues to get you hooked, but not enough to be worth the read. Rather disappointing if you ask me. Although supporting the author to try again wouldn't be a bad idea.
