Watashi ni xx Shinasai!: Couple-hen review
(Review contains spoilers for the main series and this sequel. TL;DR: Sappy, badly written, but hey! Middle schoolers'll eat anything up... right?)

Found this at a local library. I was with friends at the time, but two of us had read most of the series (at least, up to where it was in 2015 when I stopped caring and stopped buying the mangas... around volume 11!) under its much superior french name, Love Mission. So, when we saw that firstly, the manga was still on-going and that it even had a SEQUEL... we were hooked. We liked the original series when we were young so we figured, how bad could it be?

As it turns out, pretty bad was the answer.

This extra volume follows a similar concept to what the main series abides to; do this to me, do that to me, blah blah, until it sort of falls apart, which I assume is the point Toyama realized that the gimmick was getting sort of annoying (only took dozens of mostly non-consensual 'missions' to reach that point...)

At least, they gave up on the bait incest with Akira and Yukina by this point in the story. The relationships were still sappy, cheesy and seemingly written by someone whose only experience of love was through manga made for middle-schoolers... Which, fair enough, is where its main demography belongs.

I have heard, however from younger reviewers that the non-stop drama the book offers is good to them, so maybe I'm just not the right audience. Hint: I am not. Not anymore. At least, with Ema Toyama you know you're getting two things right: the end couples and the art style.

I've always liked her art style. It fits with the more childish, new to love approach of the book and makes for a good shoujo style in general. And it really does make the characters more likeable; because boy oh boy, are they NOT that likeable otherwise. As for the end couples, they are EXACTLY what you'd think would happen once all the characters were revealed, but that's GOOD. The other options (the 'winners' were Shigure/Yukina and Mami/Akira) either had the asshole win someone over (no one I've ever heard talk about the series liked Hisame, so... no thank you!) or had le ole' incest wincest pairing happening... Sorry, Shigure/Mami fans, your sacrifice let us not have to live in a timeline where Akira and Yukina end up together. Thank you.

Tokage no Ou review
This review is meant to be spoiler-free while taking account to the entire first volume serving as a mere prologue, where the perspective narration hasn't been fleshed out clearly yet.
//Note: the first volume has an manga adaptation.
//Note: I have finished five volumes of this series (currently at five volumes)
______________________________________

Tokage no Ou revolves around two main characters, with three different perspectives being narrated consecutively (by sections indicated with animal icons). This series mainly deals with matters of deception and vengeance.

Tokage no Ou begins with introducing one of our main characters, Ikagawa Tokage, who has a severe case of "chuunibyou". He has an actual power however, albeit it being a useless one; Tokage can freely alter the colors of his eyes. In his youth, repetitive usage of his power caused him to forget his original eye color, which shocked his parents greatly. As fanatical followers of a religious cult revolving around a "real life God" - Egret, a girl with wings of light, Tokage's parents refer to him as a "demon child" and frequently abandons their household affairs to spend time in said cult and to avoid the aberrant boy.

Disgusted by his parents' abnormal life, Tokage's case of chuunibyou allowed him to escape reality through making up a backstory to explain his special existence and power, which he believes will evolve as time goes on. Becoming a delinquent due to these circumstances, he is mostly a loner who "trains" his ability periodically in an abandoned building. When a scream appeared from the lower levels on one of these days, he prepares an escape ladder he made for such kind of scenarios (thanks, chuunibyou!) to escape from the outer walls. But when the ladder broke and forced him to land in one floor below, what he sees before him effectively changes his path in life.

In the abandoned building, various individuals gather, in which the other two perspectives of the narration arrive to as well, including main character B. Following a chain of events, Tokage and our second main character escape alive but both lose something important to them, therefore beginning their quest to vengeance.

Characters in Tokage no Ou can be considered its strongest point, as the story deals with the main characters' affected lives and their changing psyche as the series proceed. All (named) characters are connected to each another in some way, where nobody can be labeled as either a friend or foe. Regardless of their appearance count, the majority of characters alter the story by a little in the grand scheme of things. One bonus we get from these characters is how some of them have special abilities that seem so trivial, yet are put to use creatively.

The artwork is clean and engaging, with minor parts that may be a little messy but doesn't affect the overall mood. Though there are some "pointless" images that exist for the sole purpose of erotic fan service, there is generally only one image per volume like such.

Overall, Tokage no Ou is quite an appealing story that boasts a high enjoyment value. While it lacks a complicated story line, it includes quite a few mystery factors through seemingly vague ideas; the whole image is gradually connected through details given by the three sides of narration. Though the story may be considered tragic, it has its comedic moments too. Various references to many other series make it a fun easter egg bonus. One downside of the series is that there are currently only five volumes, with the latest one being written back in early 2013, so the current status is not entirely known as of yet. If you're a fan of tragedy, supernatural, or multiple narration, I recommend you to check out this wonderful work by Iruma Hitoma.

Dokumushi review
I heard about this monger through the anime man and once I heard him compared it to the likes of Saw and Battle Royale I knew I immediately had to check it out I'm a huge horror junkie so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and I was disappointed. I don't get very much horror vibe from this there's no good atmosphere the seven main characters range from despicable and unlikable especially in regards to the lesbian character who I couldn't wait to watch die I to just bland or okay, the art style is just very serviceable and nothing really all that special there are times where the arch really shines especially during the sex scenes conveniently enough are actually times where the art can look pretty good but due to a lack of proper horror atmosphere it's almost pointless. There are some scenes that put a smile on my face such as some of the actions of the hostess character and the guy who is a cultist is the closest thing to an interesting character, and the death of the lesbian character was extremely satisfying alongside the death of the unlikable lesbian character in her flashback was equally as gratifying, however the final nail in the coffin for me and what really kills this manga for me is only two out of the six volumes are translated so I actually can't read the other for so I can't continue the story I don't understand how this manga has been around for almost 2 years now and it hasn't been fully translated BULLSHIT.
my personal recommendation skip this at least until it gets fully translated and check out Elfen lied and Another they are much better or experiences and are worth your time.

Paperweight Eye review
I wanted so badly to enjoy this manga. Such an interesting and original concept, such beautiful artwork, and a yandere-ish, mysterious male lead to boot - it had so much potential.

Story: 6

The ONLY reason I gave this manga's story a 6/10 is because of the originality and potential of the concept. The pacing of this manga is awful, and this is one of the main reasons that I struggled to finish it. I've never read anything like it before, and that automatically meant that I considered it a 3/10. Top it off with one point for my general (but infinitesimal) enjoyment of the story and one point from sheer generosity, and there you have it.

Art: 9ish/10

The art was gorgeous! There were times when I could tell that the mangaka had been feeling a bit rushed, or perhaps a bit tired of drawing, but this didn't bother me at all. Other than that, expressions and emotions were well executed, and plenty of detail was provided. This manga was pretty, if nothing else.

Character: 4/10

This is where the manga reeeally lost my attention. The characters are shallow, two-dimensional, and seemed silly. Don't get me wrong, there certainly were interesting aspects of the main and main supports, BUT with no character development, it all fell flat.

Enjoyment: 5/10

As I said, I really wanted to like this manga. I'm disappointed because this sort of thing is right up my alley, yet I had to literally drag myself through the last half of it.

Overall: 5/10

See above. I have nothing else to say. :c

AKI-SORA review
Warning: this review may contain spoilers.
First impressions: So when getting into this manga, I was a little skeptical to review it because of its somewhat controversial nature dealing with rape, incest, orgies, etc. But I will try my best to review it.

Story, 6/10
"Love is a thing that comes in many forms"
"But what happened when your love is a taboo in society?"
The story begins with Sora who is starting to come to terms with the fact that he is in love with his older sister, Aki. While trying to hide this fact, he finds out that Aki also loves him through a very awkward bath time experience and a heart to heart chat which eventually leads to sex. At this point, both of them decide to began there relationship together.

So Aki-sora is basically an ecchi drama with a taboo relationship added in for more flavor. It's centered around the main character trying to come to terms with the fact that he and his sister are in love with each other and are in this incestual relationship, while trying to hide it from every one else.

So we have this romance story about incest which would turn a lot of people away. Which I can kind of understand a bit. But personally, I don't really mind because for me it not what is in a story that counts; rather, it's what they do with it that counts. For the most part Aki-sora does do an okay job at presenting this taboo relationship.
They took it seriously enough that it has some very genuine moments within it, and it actually looks like they both care for each deeply. But I would like to add before I continue this review that I am in no way promoting the idea that any of you try and fuck your family members.

But like all those who pursue forbidden fruit, they eventually get the consequences of what such a “relationship” would offer. However, I would probably use that word loosely. But this taboo relationship becomes almost like flavoring at some points because the story decides to throw in a harem so that every one can get on the main character's mighty sword.

Literally right after he starts going out with his sister, Sora gets dragged into all these crazy sexual situations, like meeting a girl who is an exhibitionist, getting into a sexual relationship with his twin sister's best friend, getting raped by his twin sister, getting involved in an orgy, and also having sex with one of his friends girlfriend twice. So It's really over the top with its fan service, which didn't bother me that much because I quite like ecchi and fan service and all that other stuff. But the problem with it is that this story has quite a bit of quote unquote "mature" content in it.

Because this show does have incest as a main theme, which is quite serious I might add, its nice that this story took that aspect at least a little bit seriously. However, I couldn't take this story seriously because of all the other stuff that is going on in the background. I mean if you are in “love” with someone, you generally don't have casual sex with a bunch of other people while in a serious relationship. Or maybe that's just me because I was raised in a old fashioned household. Maybe this is some new social practice which I haven't heard of before.

However, one positive regarding this aspect in particular is that it seems to show you some of the different ideologies that people have when it comes to relationships with the main character by exploring some those different ideologies with some of the different characters in the story. So that was kind of interesting. Although they really don't to much with it.

However, when I think about it, this is an ecchi story, so I shouldn't take it too seriously. But it's interesting for an ecchi show to have some kind of serious aspects to it. So I give credit where it's due.

But the final nail in the coffin is the ending. It basically ends open to interpretation. I feel there was going to be more story, but never got the chance to get there. Afterwards, I found out that it actually got cancelled. So I guess that explains it.
But I still feel that it was incomplete. But even if that were the case, a good writer would actual take that into consideration when trying to wrap it up. Not saying the writing was bad… Ok, to be honest, the writing was pretty meh as a whole.

Characters, 5/10
So the Main character can be pretty much described as a person who has got a sister complex and is some what of a push over. However, I did like the fact he was somewhat realistic in his reaction to him being in these some what sexual situations with a lot of these girls that we meet. Because let's be honest- wouldn’t most men his age do a similar thing he was doing if they got Into those situations?

The side characters are pretty basic in personality and I wouldn't say generic; rather, it's just that they feel very unnatural to me as characters. Although, it is probably because they are involved in situations that isn't your every day kind of thing. But they do add some psychoanalysis to the characters in order to add some depth to them, which I quite liked. But other than that there really isn't much to them.

But I really liked the whole thing about Sora's twin sister Nami and her best friend because it basically shows you what jealousy can actually do to a person and how you shouldn't try to pursue a relationship when you have been in the friend zone.

Art, 6/10
So the art work for Aka-sora Is pretty average. The nsfw scenes were nicely drawn. The backgrounds were okay for the most part. The character designs are also generic.

Enjoyment, 5/10
So for Aki-sora I kind of liked it for what it was. But at the same time I don't know whether to hate it or the like it, so I liked that it was somewhat different I guess. And that's not a bad thing. But in all honestly, if you going to do something like this, I think it better if you try a bit harder to make your story better written.

Overall,6/10
If you are a person who has strong morals then I recommend that you stay away from this and read something different. But if you are a person that likes ecchi then you will probably like it a bit, I guess. But in all honesty this would have been better as a hentai instead of an ecchi/drama/whatever tags it has.

Iron Knight review
Originally, I started off with the OneShot of Iron Knight and thought it was fantastic plenty of potential for a full serialization.

Low and behold when WSJ finally did serialize they toned down some of the darker themes and reduced the age of several characters to increase "broad appeal".

After just one chapter, I gave up on this version of it and felt content with just the OS. That was my true mistake however.

Story: 10

I've heard talk of how this is an Attack On Titan ripoff story and I can definitely see the similarites. What with the Demons attacking humanity and MC who becomes one to fight them. But they end right there. This takes place in a modern day society, with no walls protecting people.

To an extent though, you could say that this is how AOT must've been when the Titans first arrived in their world. In the beginning, we get to see how Teppei, our MC, is left alone with amnesia and discovering as to what has happened to the world he once knew. This plot line is closer to something like 11 eyes, HOTD, or even Deadman Wonderland.

Art: 8

The artwork itself is nothing spectacular, however the artstyle and designs are very beautiful and sometimes detailed. Especially when Teppei fully transforms.

The Demons are not so lucky as most are kindof outlines of their bodies without having evey detail put in with the exception of the most recent one.

Characters: 8

I did mention how he is younger and yes he is now 10 instead of 15 or 16. And he really shows his naivety and ignorance on occasions. That combined with his notions of Jutice make him seem more like Shirou from FSN.

But the difference is that Teppei is not overly idealistic and has accepted that he can't save everyone and that those who he do manage to save probably won't accept him because of what he's become.

Enjoyment: 10

This Serialization may not be as dark as the OS but it's definitely just as foreboding. At every turn and corner Teppei faces danger from not just Demons but himself as his own youth can make him choose decisions that put himself and those he's trying to save in mortal danger.

This gives this version a very tense atmosphere, while it can also try to throw some comedy in every once in a while.

Overall: 9

It hasn't gotten very far ( As of this review it's only 5 Chapters in), but it has some of the greatest potential seen in years and releases rather quickly ( As those 5 Chapters were put out in roughly a month and a half).

I would highly reccomend anyone to read the OS first to get feel for this and then move on to the Serialization and give it at least 3 chapters.

I hope this gets Licensed here in the US and maybe get an anime adaptation in about 2 or 3 years. Although I'm not certain how long this will go on.

Sakura Namiki review
The Rows of Cherry Trees is best described as "delicate". It's a small volume, one filled with an emotional yet elegant love story. In the ping-pong team of one all-girls' school, sweet Yukiko nurse admiration for her "onee-sama" Chikage even when their relationship is threatened. Like many early girls love (and boys love) titles, this isn't a story of romance as we tend to think of it -- full of confessions and dating and sex -- but rather the tale of a passionate love, one that may never bloom into an official relationship but stays strong just the same. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much in the way of characters to get attached to, and the story is quite simple, but that doesn't stop it from being a lovable little tale all the same.

Seeing as it's from the 1950s, the art style of this manga is quite different from what the modern reader is used to. The influential shoujo artist Makoto Takahashi's style is in full bloom here: character designs are all soft curves and wide eyes. Every detail of page of this series oozes a unique beauty, one full of flowers and careful poses and perfect backgrounds; I could stare at it forever. Perhaps thanks to the fact that artists such as Osamu Tezuka had not yet fully made their mark on manga when The Rows of Cherry Trees was written, page layouts don't have the flow that I expect from manga. The best way to describe it would be calling every individual panel a little masterpiece all on its own -- lovely, but sometimes alienating each image from the next. I would not want every manga series to look like this one, but considering it's the only English-translated manga of its time, it's an excellent look into the trends of the past and warrants a read just for that.

The typical manga reader is probably more interested in excitement and suspense, in new and unique ideas and characters. That manga reader probably won't have much to gain from The Rows of Cherry Trees; rather, it will seem quaint and silly, an old-fashioned story that later manga series told in a much better fashion. However, I am not that sort of reader, and if you aren't, either, this is a wonderful read. It's a rare look into very early shoujo (besides Princess Knight, it's the earliest shoujo title that has been translated into English) and the unique elegance that it had. Gorgeous and touching in its own way, The Rows of Cherry Trees is a different sort of masterpiece.

Yankee Juku e Iku review
As a reader, it's hard to pin down Yankee Juku e Iku.

Ikariishi is a delinquent. Not much is revealed about his past, his goals, or his ideals. Throughout the story, he doesn't really become a better person or change his life drastically. It's quite difficult to tell exactly where the plot is supposed to be going, because it seems to have a mind of its own.

There is no narration in this manga, just pictures and dialogue. Many of the characters are butt-ugly, including the main character. It's strong point is neither action nor comedy, and its characters are about as complex as a LEGO structure built by a child.

Yet somehow, when you combine all these things together, it creates a weirdly fun story.

The first chapter immediately thrusts us into the world of Ikariishi, a typical scary-looking delinquent handing out ass-kickings like a beast. He has a chance meeting with a pretty girl and she misunderstands his silence as confirmation, dragging him to her cram school. He then defends her in front of the asshole teacher and decides to actually start studying to go to a normal high school. Meanwhile, another delinquent comes back from reform school, with a bone to pick with Ikariishi. She convinces him not to get into any more fights, and he is stuck between a rock and a hard place. But, in the spirit of true camaraderie, he does do the right thing in the end.

Contrary to what we expect from the manga medium, Ikariishi truly does look intimidating. The manga holds no punches when it draws the characters; most of them are ugly, fat, or creepy. Just like their outwards appearances indicate, they are mostly self-absorbed pushovers or assholes. Yet some of the beautiful people, too, are bitches; some of the ugly ones are kind at heart. There is a certain complexity to these characters, a hidden meaning behind their one-dimensional characteristics.

Or not. It's up to you, really.

This manga is very blunt. Teens are bad just for fun, bully out of boredom, and rarely think about anyone except themselves. Teachers are just as bad, and parents are far from perfect. Ikariishi does not have a strong sense of justice, and he makes mistakes. He's often compelled to make difficult decisions, but he usually makes the right ones.

Yankee Juku e Iku completely disregards traditional storytelling and tropes in manga. Somehow, it's fun to read, just purely based on how unique it is.
