Be My Sweet Darling review

'Be My Sweet Darling' is trying hard to follow the guidelines of a typical shoujo manga (in this case, manhwa), combining an unrealistic plot and some exaggerated characters which are meant to be funny and appeal to the readers. However, there is a limit to the cheesiness and sadly this manhwa goes beyond it.

The story is pretty simple: a girl and a boy go drinking together with the drama club, she gets drunk, he must take her home, but because he doesn't know where she lives, so he takes her to his own place. In the morning, they are found together in the same bed, none of them remembering what happened the previous night. So, their parents force them to marry. Well, I must admit that this plot, although really exaggerated, could lead to some funny situations as they try to cohabitate. However, the storyline is pretty incoherent (sometimes they accept each others, sometimes they are really distant, then they grow closer again, without a proper reasoning), which makes the humour kind of awkward. Also, the ending is very abrupt, kind of unnatural.

But by far the worst point of this manga was the character development. The female lead is very childish and possesive, lacking common sense, but by the end of the series (in a few pages) turns into a mature girl who understands her lover. Pretty weird, in my opinion. The male lead is just awkward. But I did find interesting the note of a side pairing (Jaemin and Gukhee). Too bad they didn't get a proper development, because that would've been a much better story than this one.

As for the art, I have no complaints, since I am not really picky about these things. The style was close to my favourite and there were just a few noticeable mistakes, not too bad anyway.

All in all, I can honestly say I didn't enjoy this manga. It was all too rushed, too forced, and the main pairing didn't get a proper development. Although the title and the plot stand for a decent shoujo manga, or manhwa in this case, 'Be My Sweet Darling' is far too overwhelming to satisfy.
