Ever Green review

Evergreen is not your casual non-concequince anime incest garbage anime, like ''KissxSis'' or ''Oreimo;''it genuinely blew my pants off with its twists, and i'll be mentioning a few of them, so spoiler alert is in order here, i suppose.

Story: It's not really any different from the usual, ''pathetic protaginist aiming for a girl way out of his league, without even realising it's love'' anime/manga plot on the surface. It's the sory of Yoshimatsu Hotaka and Awaya Niki, with Hotaka being the president of the lazy manga clun and Niki being the ace of the swimming club. Hotaka enjoys admiring her from above and below, at the same time literally and figuratively, at the same time. After he's told he has to do a swimming test to continue as a student, i believe, he ends up having to be around the girls from the swimming club and they watch the poor little guy pathetically embarass himself in front of them, and most importantly Niki, with her actively helping him with the test like the best friend you'll ever have, starting an great relationship.

Honestly, the story seems, as i mentioned, generic and overdone, but the twists and plot points revealed later on will definitely surprise you. I won't reveal the most amazing one(even if i did warn for spoilers, but shut up)because it'd ruin the whole story for you. I'll give it an 8/10, for being great but not too ambitious.

Art: Damn, i love how Kasukabe Akira drew this series, from the attractive and appealing body designs on all the characters to the beautiful background, nice-looking actions and the petrifyingly real emotions portrayed through the art style. I mean, i felt Hotaka's pain for a second when he cried desperately and rolled around in be-- I'm making this sound bad, aren't i? 9/10, nonetheless!

Characters: Here's where it gets real: Takemiya Yuyuko's pretty well-written characters that are generally believable and likeable. Hotaka, for a prime example, is a slightly anxious, slightly depressed student who just strives to interact with Niki, as if she's this...beautiful sun he can't reach(bad example, since he sees her as a lion, but eh). Niki herself, however, is not that simple to understand. She's energetic, beautiful and friendly...when she's happy with life, per say. When falsely accused, Niki goes all bully-like and could even resort to violance, going back to how she feels because of her past and all. The two side-chararcters that confused me a little, Hitachi On and Soga Shinsuke, who are also the side romance of the story, are hilariously fun to watch at times; On is Hotaka's kouhai an arguably his therapist. She's a smartass most of the time and enjoys pretending to misunderstand Hotaka just so she can see his reaction, and she's quite great in my opinion. Soga... The hell was the point, really? I mean, he's necessary so On doesn't remain alone and such, and their sub-plot was adorable beyond belief, but in the end what do we get from him? He shaves his haircut so he can prove he's gotten more serious about his studies and he realises that he likes On more than his 12 and a half thots at the school. He's not really...deep or interesting to any extent, but the other ones are great to me, so have a 7/10.

Enjoyment: I realised i spoiled what i didn't want to spoil by mentioning ''KissxSis'' and all, but nevertheless i LOVED reading this reletively short read. The ending is basically where the story began, but in a perfectly done way, with the character arcs fulfilled, and Hotaka finally feeling satsified, even if he can only watch Niki from afar and keep her back subtly. 10/10 in enjoyment, nothing else to say there.

My overall enjoyment with the seies was immense. Like most series i finish, am reading, put on hold or just drop, i found it randomly by browsing the ''Lovely School Life'' section, and i was happily surprised. Full recommendation, it's satisfying, the twist was straight-up brilliant and while Niki's 180 personality shift was literally the biggest bitch move i've ever read about, it worked perfectly and made sense. 8/10. Thanks for reading and i say give it a read, you might like it! Bye.
