Summary
Sakai Hiroaki is a high school teenage mastermind with a genius-level intelligence and a lack of interest in anything that is easy to him. During one unlucky day, in an attempt to stop a student from committing suicide, he ends up committing suicide himself. After he awakens, he finds himself not in the real world, nor in heaven, but in purgatory, along with a group of others who did the same. Sakai discovers that he and his peers are subjected to never-ending intense death games in this world for reasons unknown to him, and he tries to find a way to escape.

Rengoku Dead Role review

Rengoku Dead Role or Purgatory Survival is great.
Thats it.
I said it.
The story starts with a boy named Hiroaki Sakai dying while trying to prevent a girls from committing suicide after he fell of the roof himself while trying to pull her up. He blacks out and after he wakes up he finds himself in a room with a few strangers. He is being told that his punishments for killing himself is that he is forced to play terrible games with other people who killed themselves too and a mysterious entity only known as a „dealer“. They are forced to kill each other in a game the dealer chooses until somebody wins. After dying, they are reborn and have to do the same all over again. There are only two ways out of this circle: Everyone has to die in the game or you have to kill 666 other people to be granted any wish you have.
The number of people to go can be seen carved into the persons body.
As Sakai is a very ambitious person, he doesn’t want to lose the game against the god of the purgatory. And this is how it begins.
On the way to his goal, he meets a lot of interesting people and has to face a lot of hard challenges.

The story is very good and I wasn’t bored at any point while reading it. It creates a lot of suspense and has quite a few plot twists. I loved it! It can be a little bit gory at times and there is a lot of blood but if you are fine with that, this manga is something for you.

The characters in the story are all very original and very well implemented in the overall setting. It didn’t feel like they didn’t belong there at all. There is quite a lot of character development and there were no characters that I thought were annoying.

The art in this manga is very good! There is a lot of detail in the backgrounds and it didn’t feel bland or lifeless. You can see how much attention was put into the smallest and most unimportant things and I think that is great!

The manga was overall a really great experience and I really enjoyed it. If you like a bit of horror/gore and you like solving riddles, you’ll love this manga.
