Seto no Hanayome review

Seto no Hanayome was one of the first manga I've ever started to read and the first manga I've witnessed to fall into the Translation Hell.
Just a little backgroud info: the original Japanese publishing ended in 2010 and sadly, it wasn't licensed by any western company to release an official English version. Quite average story so far, back in the days it was the industry standard. Few committed groups started to translate it but the amount of fishy puns (pun intended) and overall ridiculous difficulty of language made their effort really overpowering. Drops were frequent but there were always some others to continue. Well, it went like this until 2011 then all the projects died. Seto no Hanayome went into my On-hold list at 60/76 chapters and I was sure, it will stay there forever. After 8 long years I've spent sobbing and pressing F5 everywhere (might be some slight exaggeration here), the project is finally finished. Back to the review.

Story: 7/10. Heartwarming and fun story about the differences between normal- and merperson, also everyday people and yakuza. There aren't any big cliffhangers of plot twists, you get what you expect from the start of the show. It stays really funny from start to finish but lot of the jokes are hard to understand without cultural background.

Art: 7/10. Bouncing between normal and SD character designs, Kimura-sensei was able to express a wide range of expressions with his style. I really liked Sun-chan's dead fish eyes (pun intended) and Nagasumi's face when Masa-san was around.

Character 6/10. Every character was unique but there was barely any development through the story.

Enjoyment 8/10. This is the part where it shines. Almost every chapter had a wtf moment, the tsukkomi action was on point, the returning gags were never old.

Overall 7/10. It seems low at first but I'd recommend it without the slightest doubt for any gag manga fan. This score would have been around 8 or even a 9 in 2011 but so many years have passed and so many great series were born that I have to be real here. Still, it's having an unique charm which made me reread the whole story first when the last chapter came out, to fully enjoy the ride. Go for it, you won't regret it either.
