Paperweight Eye

I wanted so badly to enjoy this manga. Such an interesting and original concept, such beautiful artwork, and a yandere-ish, mysterious male lead to boot - it had so much potential.

Story: 6

The ONLY reason I gave this manga's story a 6/10 is because of the originality and potential of the concept. The pacing of this manga is awful, and this is one of the main reasons that I struggled to finish it. I've never read anything like it before, and that automatically meant that I considered it a 3/10. Top it off with one point for my general (but infinitesimal) enjoyment of the story and one point from sheer generosity, and there you have it.

Art: 9ish/10

The art was gorgeous! There were times when I could tell that the mangaka had been feeling a bit rushed, or perhaps a bit tired of drawing, but this didn't bother me at all. Other than that, expressions and emotions were well executed, and plenty of detail was provided. This manga was pretty, if nothing else.

Character: 4/10

This is where the manga reeeally lost my attention. The characters are shallow, two-dimensional, and seemed silly. Don't get me wrong, there certainly were interesting aspects of the main and main supports, BUT with no character development, it all fell flat.

Enjoyment: 5/10

As I said, I really wanted to like this manga. I'm disappointed because this sort of thing is right up my alley, yet I had to literally drag myself through the last half of it.

Y'know at first glance, I really had this thought that this short series could have the potential to be a decent horror manga because the art style was pretty good enough and the characters were not that bad. It also gave me The Shining or Melanie Martinez music videos vibes lol. However it failed to be a decent horror manga, due to the fact it wasn't great at deep diving into the characters minds like there should have been room for improvement. I just feel the author made the characters dull and seem rather unimportant to the story.

Yeah it's just a shame that I had high hopes for this 11 chapter manga to be better than any other horror manga out there but not this time unfortunately....

When I began reading this manga, it had already finished, so when I saw it only had 11 chapters I expected a fairly light read. This expectation was turned on its head completely. Right from the get-go the author begins to tackle heavy themes like childhood trauma and later on what it means to be human. There are stories that can pull off such strong themes in a short time, but this was sadly not one of them. For the majority of the time the story felt rushed and the last 3 chapters just jumped from twist to convoluted twist, ending up only confusing itself.
3/10 Story

The art however is gorgeous, for the most part. In many places it reminds me of the style of CLAMP, with a shoujo-manga style which lends itself well to this story. The main dolls in particular show great detail in their design. I sing such high praise, but having looked at some of the artist’s other work, it definitely seems rushed on many pages, which is unfortunate.

The characters are well defined for the amount of development they get, but they nonetheless lack any depth. This in itself is not a problem for the dolls as a stylistic choice, but the human characters needed more fleshing out. The protagonist begins quite strong, but as the pages go by she begins to fall apart, changing her entire mindset at the drop of a hat. In my opinion this is mainly an issue with the overall length of the manga.

I can’t say this manga is my usual reading material, but I was venturing into unknown literary territory on purpose. This did bring my personal enjoyment of it down a bit. The concepts in Paperweight Eye were interesting, but lacked the time to be explored to their full potential. This in particular severely hampered my enjoyment.
4/10 Enjoyment

I honestly can’t recommend this manga to very many people, since I feel it’s a rather incomplete work. The strongest point is the art, but for that there are plenty of manga that do it just as well while combined with a stronger story and characters.
