Keroro Gunsou

Keroro Gunsou may be one of the most memorable gag comedies ever made. The jokes are hilarious and varied, the art is very detailed and even has some very disturbing facial expressions which the author does from time to time.

For the fans of the Anime, you would think this is (barely) safe for kids. Wrong. Keroro Gunso was previously a manga series for college students and up, so the content is much stronger than the TV show. This makes way for a lot more outstanding jokes as it always pushes boundaries it really should not do. To have these cute characters in horrible situations is the best thing they have ever done. The manga could be compared to Ebichu because of the strong animal cruelty from Natsumi and black comedy.

Story 8/10

There really isn't any story in this show. Five frogs have been sent to Earth (Pokopen, censored to Pekopon in the Anime because of racist reasons against the Chinese) and have the mission of conquering the planet, which they never manage to do. There is a lot of small one-chapter episodes though, which are always a joy to read. The story never touch any boring topics, does satire and really does not know what "too far" is.

Characters 10/10

You will love every main character in the show, the five frogs including their house keepers. Every character has some chapters dedicated to them. They are unique, fun and full of expressions. You will most likely notice their absence in the start of the manga, the show really is not what it is without everyone. Keroro the fast and quircky main character, Giroro the weapon maniac, Tamama the gay, Kururu the Otaku/Pedophile and Dororo the lonely Ninja.

The character who really stands out, Kururu, really shines in the manga. He appears nowhere as twisted, crude and sadomasochistic in the Anime as he does here. He has shower footage of everyone living in the Hinata house (thanks to his hidden cameras), causes strong pain for every character in the manga and even sells his hidden footage through the net. He trolls everyone and has no conscience at all.

Art 8/10

The art is pretty much simplistic, but Mine Yoshizaki has a lot of room to show his artistic skills. I am talking about the facial expressions I mentioned earlier. Every time the characters sees something shocking or disturbing, their faces turn into a whole lot of mess. These expressions are awfully detailed to make the frogs ook the ugliest possible. From the cute frog style to this grose, scary face like right from a horror movie, you must see it to believe it.

Enjoyment 10/10

If you thought Gintama was taking everything too far, you know nothing yet. The manga is full of fanservice, as well as Natsumis daily frog abuse. There will be blood, which there is, and is always fast-paced with no moral at all (unlike the Anime). The manga never seems to get old, not even at volume 22. It keeps getting better and better, with new ideas for every chapter. There is a bunch of parodies and pop-culture references as well. The only parts I will complain about is the chapters based after the second Keroro movie. Really unecessary if you have already watched it, as it's completely the same, only a bit more fanservey.

I have never enjoyed any manga as much as this. The manga keeps staying fresh (unlike the show) and does everything it needs to do to keep the readers attention. It's full of jokes, as well as some rare dramatic chapters, which is surprisingly well done and manages to shed tears. For fans of this author, there is also some crossovers chapters from his previous manga series and doujinshi. The facial expressions is once again the highlight.

I would recommend this to every Anime fan with a sense of humor. It's smart and stupid at the same time and pokes fun at every mainstream anime/manga out there, mostly itself. Breaking the Fourth Wall is no problem for this manga either. I would only tell you to look another way if you have a weak heart for blood, as there is quite a lot. However, it is only used in humorous situations.

I'm surprised there are no in-depth reviews of Keroro Gunsou, so here goes. It's also called Sgt. Frog, so you might see me switching off between names.

I'm tempted to say that part of this manga is slice of life, and for the most part thats true. Most of the fillers involve holidays or traditional Japanese events, and its really refreshing to see these within a manga. No real predominate romance or action either; this manga is all about the comedy. And boy, does it get funny and weird.

STORY: 9/10

Get this: Frog-like aliens attempt to invade earth and get caught by two middle/high school kids, one of which is obsessed with the supernatural and one of which enslaves the aliens to do menial housework. How original is that? This is probably the most creative story I have seen a manga attempt to weave, and so far I am excited to say that it has been a success, even to the extent that Keroro Gunsou is released here in the US. Why don't we hear about it more, then? Beats me.

ART: 9/10

Yoshizaki take few liberties in the drawing of Keroro Gunsou. What I really enjoy are the unique facial expressions of the frogs; they seem endless and always funny. Some of my fav eye styles as well.

CHARACTER: 9/10

Some characters are predictable, some are not. They are all unique in some way or another, and this is proven by Yoshizaki's purposefully over-complicated character web that he so kindly includes in every one of his volumes. Quite entertaining to see how the love/hate relationships play out. Did i say entertaining? that leads right in to:

Even the fillers are funny/slice of life-y. There's always something new happening, and whatever it is there's a lot of humor there too. The only reason I didnt give this a 10 was because there are a lot of japanese jokes that I don't understand beacuse I'm obviously not japanese. The manga tries to explain these so i can understand them, its just not as good if I don't know the culture. Still very funny, and the only manga I actually buy.

OVERALL: 9/10

The average of 4 9's is a 9, what a surprise. I definitely reccomend checking this manga out, though. If you enjoy fun, laughing, good times, and strange plotlines (not always too strange) then you'll love Keroro Gunsou

what will happen if you give doraemon gun, knifre, and bazooka and there are five of him? you'll get keroro gunsuo. each of these doraemons also has a cute girl to accompany him.
This manga version is more mature than the anime version, every now and then you get to see the girls naked. If in the anime Koyuki seems to be mostly interested in NNatsumi as a friend, in this manga she wants more than just being her friend,read sexually attracted). Her relationship with Dororo is also more suggestive. They sleep in the same blanket.
Sadly the artwork is bad compared to that of the anime. The girls are not skinny and leggy. I bet if they remake keroro gunsou with the same artwork with that of the anime. It's going to be big
