Deadman Wonderland

Deadman Wonderland are, without a doubt, a great manga of all time.
It mus be read and re-read for those who really appreciates all sort of things that can be found in a great story: gore, love, nice characters, plot twists, nice quotes and a wonderful philosophy.
The art just fits so weel, it's incredible.
The anime for the manga is good as well, but something is missing, wich is the last arch. I would say that the last arch on the manga has a big plot twist, and this makes the manga so great, so solid, you can barely hold your tears, and I'm serious.
If you like good art style, but, most important, a good story and a great character development, this manga is for you.
Read it.

Shocking and intriguing hook, great characters, disappointing Conclusion



Deadman wonderland is an interesting, dark, and action packed manga with great character interactions but... for some reason, maybey because my expectations were so high after waiting a year before starting this manga and finding the conclusion to this intriguing mystery, disappointing. As characters are being murder, tortured, exclude and rejected by everyone thanks to the red man and the branch of sin, the answers to all of this problems and to free them self from the branch of sin is.... friendship and love?., to not get into spoiler, the ending feel out of place, super cheesy/corny and fanservicy, not to mention alot of the misterys (correct me if im wrong or if i miss/misinterpreted something) such as the chorus box, the mother gooses system, the start of the deadman experiments and the speeding of the branch of sin crystals, were not explane well or were explane but with several more question/plot holes arising from them, making the end feel rush, anticlimactic, corny and in my honest opinion disappointing. Don't get me wrong i still enjoy it and would recommended it for the character development/interactions and the impressive and beautiful battles alone but if any of the aforementioned points would leave you unsatify/disappointed I would heavily recommended to stay away for this one, specially if you enjoy and finish the anime.... some mysterys are best left unanswered.

Deadman wonderland, while not perfect, is a phenomenal manga. While I adore the show, the manga ultimately outshines it in quality and quantity, tying up the story and telling stories the anime never got to. If you enjoyed the show, then the manga will go beyond that.
It's worth noting that this series is not for everyone. If you dislike gore and the dark, gory genre of manga, this might not be your cup of tea.

In my opinion, the weakest point of the manga. At first, the whole thing feels rather cookie-cutter with the death games, but it does become better as it goes on (as I think is true with most things in this series).

The art from this manga is something to return to over and over again. The way each branch of sin looks is unique and interesting, and many individual panels of a fight are absolutely awesome. The art during such fights is phenomenal, and something that really makes this series stand out. When there is no action happening, the artists play around with the character's expressions to give them a lot of personality. All of the character designs, while some (shiro) are initially jarring, are all very good and fit with the character.

Ganta gets a lot of flak, but at the end of the day, he's a yound kid thrown into a nightmare scenario. What makes him special is his dedication to his friends and refusal to give up, no matter what. It's these traits that make him someone you can root for. The manga's continued story really helps allow him to grow as a character, because this manga gets better as it goes on. This category is where the show missed out a lot: in the manga, we get the awesome characters Chaplin, Idaki, and Azami, who never got to appear in the show. Chaplin in particular is worth reading for, as she's one of the best-written and most like-able transgender manga characters. All of the characters are flawed and broke, and it's because of this that they all are so great - nobody's perfect, and deadman wonderland knows this. Despite this, you can still sympathise with and love all of them, despite their flaws (or maybe because of them).

This is, of course, subjective, but I loved this manga. I had never read a manga sereis before (just watched anime), but the show's incomplete story led me to try and read it. Ultimately, the manga far outshines the show in almost every category, and is well worth your time.

Not perfect, but a damn good manga and something that needs more attention.

Okay so after binge-reading the whole series (literally my eyes started to burn by the afternoon), I finished Deadman Wonderland.
I haven't read many or any horror mangas to be honest, but I would assume this would be in my top 10. However, this manga is not for the faint of heart especially if you can't handle blood or gore.
As told above, you start with gore within the first chapter or two.


LIKES...
# It's beautifully drawn and with such precise detail it's awe worthy. But even saying so, don't go in thinking this is the most unique or best I've seen. To each their own.

# Typically most arts trying to incorporate horror, just stuff it to death with gore. This manga excelled in my opinion because it tried to deviate from the path by having a decent plot with many twists that I didn't expect to happen. The comedic relief helped this manga not just to move it along, but provide a break from the action and horror.

# Developments & backstories. You know what took me by surprise is the characters besides Ganta. Their character developments are bittersweet because they grow into better people, but you find out their tragic pasts that no one should go through :c Yet when they are put to the test, each character overcomes their pasts and then puts their best foot forward, striving to live a better life than the ones they were dealt with. Fanta also grows into a man (oh la la~?) with each passing chapter, and he is not even comparable to his character at the start of the manga.


DISLIKES....
# Revealing the I identity of the Red Man. This is not what ticked me off, but I feel they should have waited to reveal who it was for further in the manga. It made the big revelation for Ganta to be less savory. I would have loved to find out with Ganta, instead I could tell right from the beginning who it was.

# The ending....I feel cheated....Like WTF? It was an okay ending but honestly it felt like it was ended too quickly. And I don't know if it was me or what, but it seemed as if the last chapters were out of order. I honestly could not believe that it was over when it was over.

(just for the record, this is a slight alteration of my anime review)

Recipe: Take a third of Battle Royale, a third of Prison Break, and a third of Akira. Stir them in a bawl until the flavor is all gone and add lots of bad storytelling around the plate it is served upon. The result is Deadman Wonderland. Or as I prefer to call it, BrainDeadman COCOland; a completely unrealistic and chaotic show, with lots of gore thrown in to attract the casual viewers with superficial entertainment. Everything is made to be as much exaggerated as possible with violence overblown forced drama in an attempt to make it look special. It can work if you shut off your brain and expect to see nothing more than gore and unexpected plotlines because of the completely chaotic nature. If you are otherwise looking for some consistency, originality, reasoning, and other elite / snobby / culturistic stuff, you are watching the wrong show.

DW is the story of a boy being accused wrongfully to be a mass murderer and being sentenced to prison. Albeit not any prison but an amusement park where the inmates fight in various death games for the entertainment of the populace and where everybody is dressed as a silly plushy animal. There, the boy needs to find a way to survive the games as well as discover the real murderer, who seems to be an inmate in the same prison. He gains psionic powers (queue for the typical hidden dark superpower of every shonen lead) and needs to train in order to survive in prison, avenge the death of his friends, and prove his innocence.
- The premise sounds a lot better than the actual plot; if the show was taking itself seriously we would have an interesting action/survival/mystery story on our hands but instead of that we get a random line of events that are purely coo-coo entertainment.
- Unlike most manga, pacing is not an issue; each chapter provides lots of progress and revelations, and the action is generally interesting, for being too gory or exaggerated. At the same time pacing is not good as many things are going by in a few minutes, which makes all character development to feel rushed and forced.
- Storytelling is terrible. You constantly see people talking or looking at very scary or dramatic events and don’t react for several minutes, even when they are full of anger or terror. You also see how the plot is random, as elements are introduced without any sort of foreshadowing.

Artwork is ok although all the focus in given to gore and even that is occasionally not that great; I have seen far more in other manga.
- The prison/amusement park may feel quite memorable to most but it’s otherwise not something that makes sense in the way it is run; you are again not supposed to think about it much.
- The characters do not look memorable in any way, nor do their special attacks; a thing that makes them very forgettable next to the setting. It makes you care more about the gore than the people experiencing it, which is a sign of lazy storytelling in my book.

The characters are practically all stupid or crazy. It is a matter of personal taste if you get to like them and I just hate them. Being crazy and being an idiot are two different things and having both in the same package does not look good without proper handling.
- For example, Ganta the lead boy, is the average low intelligence, high ideals shonen lead. There is absolutely nothing special about him and could easily be replaced with any other protagonist from any other shonen show. It is not a good thing to be indifferent about the protagonist in a show full of gore and mystery and yet he feels completely out of place with his positive childish attitude. And he is so stupid, he falls for the simplest tricks, yet he performs a comeback with equally retarded straightforward attacks, which again make him look bad and a constant winner only because the scriptwriter feels like it. What is even more inconsistent is how he is unable to grasp the most basic facts yet he learns new supermoves in just a few minutes.
- Then there is his best friend Shiro. She is nothing but a super positive girl with an IQ of a monkey stereotype. Her behavior makes no sense and she is there only to eat bread and help Ganta with her antiques. She is way too genki and stupid for my tastes; I mostly see her as fan service because of that really reveling uniform of hers. You also eventually see that she has no free will of her own; she is just there as a cheap plot devise for the story to unravel anyway the scriptwriter wants. I mean she appears and disappears anytime she feels like it and nobody questions how easily she enters dangerous places or why she is even NEXT to them in the first place.
- The warden is above the law no matter how far fetched his actions are. He is some sort of a generic villain, a power crazy maniac who organizes death games for the people outside the prison and even conducts inhuman experiments in order to harness some weird psionic power centered in a red jewel in the chest of his human guinea pigs. Guess what, Ganta is one of them. He is just there as an untouchable asshole and nothing more; he completely lacks depth or sympathy from the viewer.
- The same thing expands to the rest of the minor characters; they are all stereotypes, crazy and stupid, with hardly enough immersion to care about. I personally don’t give a dime about them or their so-called drama. And guess what, all development the secondary cast receives, is to begin as adversaries to Ganta and as soon as he defeats them, they immediately become his buddies. Don’t have illusions about the cast; despite the occasional insanity and gore, everybody is shonen stock characters all the way.

The thing which eventually ruins the show is that everything is completely random.
- Amusement parks featuring death games for families to go watch while eating popcorn? Sure, why not? Let the kids watch as well; it is very amusing.
- A warden who can do anything he likes and nobody questions him? Why of course, let him blow a school bus in daylight, then get some tickets from him, go to his prison and see people being butchered while eating pop corn.
- A prison where the inmates are allowed to leave their cells and go anywhere they like? Why of course. What is that you say? Everybody is wearing explosive collars in their necks that blow up if they do something bad? Sure, that was very helpful when dozens of prisoners rebelled. Candy drugs that are supposed to addict the inmates to them as means of control? Yes, again very helpful for the dozens of rebels. Special armored prison guards that negate the inmates’ superpowers? Very helpful, until they learn how easily they can negate the negation. Psychotic inmates being used as prison control squads? Ingenious; especially for killing your own prison guards. And why are there rebel teams in the first place anyway? Nice prison security you have there warden. How about a drug or some machine that keep them at bay INTERNALLY?
- Where are the relatives of the hundreds of people that are constantly being killed making some sort of protest? Oh that’s right, they are eating popcorn and watch their loved ones being killed in an amusement park.
- Why isn’t anyone questioning Shiro for her weird appearance, how she pops out of nowhere or most of the time not even noticing her passing by them?
I can keep asking whys and the answer never comes because the show is BrainDeadman; everything is running on Idiot’s Plot.

Not even the action is that great to deem the show worthy of watching just for that. The battles and the games are more silly than exciting; they have very little choreography and very basic strategy. They follow the typical shonen fuss of the hero losing badly, getting up full of resolve and performing a move that gives him the upper hand, followed by some lame morality monologue around friendship and justice. And for some reason he is never hacked to pieces with attacks that turn other minor characters to beef jerky. As for the people he is fighting, they too are idiots for not finishing the duel with their ultimate attack right away and just waste time in gloating. When later on they use those very same ultimate attacks to save Ganta and claim they always were so powerful. Plain ass-pulling if you ask me.

After the fuzz from the initial shock of you being thrown in a setting where people go to watch inmates being dissected in an amusement park goes away, chances are you are left with nothing else to care about. It is nothing but retarded violence, forced drama and random script, around people you don’t give a damn about. DW is a very superficial and chaotic show that doesn’t have any redeeming qualities. Even the gore scenes are ruined by a lot of silly humor and shonen archetypes that water down the feeling of dread. For all the above reasons, this manga is not recommended at all.

10 years after a large, but really big earthquake in Japan (and this story was created before the earthquake there) the country is rebuilt, and one of the measures for this is the construction of a prison: Deadman Wonderland.

Deadman Wonderland is not a simple manga, created by Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou, who also wrote the manga Eureka Seven. It tells the story of Ganta Igarashi, a young man who sees all his friends being killed by a man dressed in red who is flying out the window, is guilty of murder and ends up in Deadman Wonderland in prison.

Deadman Wonderland is not just a prison, it was made to look like a macabre amusement park where prisoners would be the main attraction, every day would attractions such as racing, wrestling and others to meet the wishes of blood from viewers, who think all just a show. As the name implies, the prison has only sentenced prisoners to death, and to ensure the good condition inside there are some rules:

- At least every three days an inmate should eat something they call "Sweet", a small antidote to a poison that is injected via mechanical collars, if not make them die.

- Win the race, or even survive, gives you credits, which are almost a money inside the prison, with that you can buy almost anything, indicate that you can also buy their freedom for a very high price.

Life in this prison would not be so easy, add it to discover that you have a strange power, you control your own blood, in the case of Ganta he shoots bullets blood. Thus it becomes an aberration and is mistreated. But there is that the manga begins, then we go to the secret section of the prison, where the Carnival Corpse (I do not short the rendering "Bodies Carnival") happens, the battle of the real Deadman, people infected with Sin Branch (this I agree to Branch of Sin) which is the ability to control the blood, but in each it happens differently.

In terms of powers is one thing I like is that, although not a Sci-Fy, they try to explain what happens and effects of powers. The Ganta to shoot is very anemic from lack of blood, one makes a glove of blood that is hard because of the carbon ... and so on, some explanations are somewhat fanciful, but within THEM logic makes sense.

The traces do not bother or are messy, but I also do not think genius, there manga with better features out there (Blade of the Immortal say so) but does not hurt, I saw people saying out there that would not read by do not like the dash, as I've seen talking about One-Piece and Berserk. But it should be noted, there are violent images, are not heavy gore, full of guts as Berserk, yet have heavier scenes.

The plot follows Ganta learning to use the power and having a series of crises, although the main character I can not really like it, it's very full of mimimi and many crises wonder, is like a person who likes to suffer You're welcome. Okay, it's a teenager, but still there are certain hours that it's annoying drama it is for nothing. But after the crisis, you see what's really behind Deadman Wonderland, which technically originated the branch of sin, who is the Wretched Egg (I do not know if it's Wretched Egg was called in translation) and other great mysteries that world there, including earthquake. For all who are infected with the branch of sin has a significant history with the quake.

What about characters, although the main leave to be desired have a range of much better characters and fun, starting with Shiro, who is a crazy girl who technically does not hurt and is simply happy. Senji which is the Cool Guy manga and meets VERY well that role, and even a call Drag Masaru. The secondary characters are more worthwhile and are better than the main character, but the ladder they do for Ganta ends up working very well.

In the end, Deadman Wonderland is a median trace of manga, with a great story that ends up surprising, good minor characters and an excellent plot with mysteries and twists that does not fall short. And a manga without courage to try betting on epicidade and get some profit that. For those who like a story a bit darker, it's worth.

Pois então, o que dizer sobre Deadman Wonderland?

Possivelmente a melhor história que já li.
Pois esta, em seus 13 volumes, conseguiu me deixar triste, feliz, enjoada, enojada, irritada (com certos personagens), serena, encorajada, esperançosa e com sentimento de amor honesto e latente no coração. Sem nem ao menos saber exatamente do que se tratava e sem nenhuma pretensão do que acharia no fim de tudo, comecei a ler este maravilhoso mangá. Onde o início já te dá facadas, uma atrás da outra, te deixando perdido na história e se perguntando What the hell is going on? e bem antes de chegar na metade (onde você já estaria cogitando abandonar a leitura), você percebe estar completamente envolto em seu conteúdo e querendo respostas a tantas perguntas que o mesmo traz.

Porém, já na segunda metade você terá seu coração dilacerado com tantos tiros que recebeu desde o início e se encontra com opiniões adversas e divididas. Para no final de tudo apenas perceber que você verdadeiramente nunca soube o que é o significado da frase "O amor e o ódio andam lado a lado". E que, há paz e esperança quando se encontra uma luz e uma razão para viver (e que existem vários tipos de vida). Bem quando você terminar, tudo ao seu redor nunca terá tanto sentido ou deixará de ter.

E então, a pergunta: O pica-pau ficou feliz?

Porém fica o aviso:

First Manga I ever read, and now I'm starting to read manga, because Deadman Wonderland's anime was very incomplete, even though I loved the concept, and so I had the read the manga to get the answers I needed. And you should do the same.

So, a unique prison in Japan called Deadman Wonderland was built after an incident which involved an Earthquake. In this establishment, prisoners are in death row, getting slowly poisoned for 3 days and end up dying. However they can participate in circus like and entertaining events to an ignorant public from the outside world, thinking they are just "pretending" deaths. Igarashi Ganta, accused from mass murder of his classmates ends up there and meets Shiro and other characters that may help him on getting stronger, escape from the prison, claim his innocence, get revenge from the "Red Man" (the one who killed his classmates) and later with a group of characters, revealing to the public what is really going on. Some of the prisoners have special powers called "Branches of Sin". Those who have these powers are called Deadman.

The story is quite good, I really enjoyed the slow process trough chapters and explaining what could happen inside DW. When I ended up discovering more and more and unraveling more mysteries, the story gets even more interesting and I ended up reading a lot until I got to the final chapter. When a story sometimes "gets you" by surprise and ends up making your reaction being something like "Wooooooow!", then it probably is a good story.

I don't have deep arguments when it comes to manga art, since this is the first manga I have seriously read, but I quite like it, and in my opinion, it is well done, I easily understood what was going on in action scenes. I also loved the circus-like design from the prison, the bloody moments and the characters which are well made, speaking of which, Crow makes me remember of Bleach's Zaraki (xD).

Anyhow, about the characters, Shiro ends up to be more interesting than Ganta, in my opinion, because Ganta is that typical protagonist guy who wants to get stronger for a reason, and in reality, he is a weak guy. He ends up just getting very lucky for his "Branch of Sin" having something different, that's all, because he has no battle experience. It's somehow understandable that he tries to save and protect everyone (typical atitude of a protagonist too) and sometimes he ends up making decisions that brings bad consequences, but sometimes it gets a little tiring. Shiro ends up being more interesting because, despite of the sweet girl personality, quite early in the manga, you quickly understand she has "another mask", and finding out what's going on with her is just amazing. As the other characters, they are quite unique within the manga, and you end up learning about their pasts and the reason they ended up in jail and the way they somehow deal with their past thoughts. Gotta love each one's personality and traits. As I went further into the story, their importance gets even higher and I ended up loving them even more.

To sum it up, if you are one of those DW fans who got frustrated with the anime version, then read this manga, it is way better. If you are one those guys who love action, blood and also some mystery, read it too. The anime is asking for a 2nd season but since the answer is right here, at the manga chapters, I don't consider it necessary anymore. As you can see, most people made positive reviews about this manga, so it's probably worth it for you.

Deadman Wonderland definitely isn't the best manga of all time, but it isn't anything bad either. Deadman Wonderland is a manga that has an interesting concept. The characters in Deadman Wonderland can attack using their own blood, it sounds really simple at first. It's been demonstrated in several other series before Deadman Wonderland, but Deadman Wonderland is different.

In Deadman Wonderland, the main character, Igarashi Ganta is framed for killing all his friends in the classroom, because he was the only one alive. At that moment, the real person who killed his friends, struck a Red Diamond into his chest, causing him to become a Deadman. After being framed for killing his friends, Ganta is sent to a prison called Deadman Wonderland, which is where the name of the series comes from; the prison.

But this isn't any normal prison. This prison is to gather Deadmen from around the world and keep them in prison. They pretty much just gather Deadmen and pop 'em in the prison, I don't really think the Deadmen done anything wrong. But, other than that, the prison is normal, with normal prisoners. Once in a while, the prison has this thing called the 'Carnival Corpse' where two Deadmen fight until one is unable to fight or is killed. The winner of the fight wins prize money and the loser has one of their body parts taken off.

Ganta gathers friends to help get out of Deadman Wonderland and destroy the owner of it, or rather, kill the owner of it. The owner of the prison is Tamaki, a guy with glasses. That's my best description for him. For him being a villain, I actually quite enjoyed Tamaki's presence. Most of the manga revolved around the prison, and I don't think the manga would of been what it is if Tamaki wasn't in it. That's probably just me, but I think Tamaki was a great villain.

The art style for the manga was pretty good. The people who created this manga are Kataoka Jinsei and Kondo Kazuma, and they're both amazing. I never actually thought that it was created by two people, I always thought the series was only created by Kataoka Jinsei. But, suddenly learning that it was also created by Kondo Kazuma is cool I guess.

The characters are something, alright. I especially like one of the characters, Takami Minatsuki, she's probably my favourite in the entire series. But, other than Minatsuki, there are a lot of other good characters to mention. The characters had good development, but some of the characters designs were, what can I say? A bit odd, I guess.

The character design for the transgender character Chaplin Sukegawa was weird at first, but I ended up getting used to it. Chaplin Sukegawa was probably in the list of my top 10 Deadman Wonderland characters, after hearing his backstory. As I said, the characters in this series seem to have good development, but I don't know if that's with every character.

Idaki Hitara is an old man who is also a Deadman who we are told hasn't slept for around 30 years. He speaks to his daughter through his mind or something, I'm not that sure, but he does speak to his daughter. We soon learn something that shocked even me, but it is spoilers so I will not include it in here.

Sakigami Toto is my favourite Deadman Wonderland character, also one of my favourite villains. Toto starts out to be just a normal Deadman in the prison, but ends up being one of the main antagonists of the series. But, that doesn't stop how fab he is. Toto looks amazing, the name sounds amazing and he is amazing. I don't even know. He's just a great character, and he has a bit of development, but not a lot.

Kiyomasa Senji is the first Deadman other than Ganta that we meet in the series, which you now wonder why I didn't mention him first. Ganta thought at first that Senji was the "Red Man" which is the person who killed his friends. But, Ganta noticed that the smile from the "Red Man" and Senji were different, even if only by a bit. Senji teaches Ganta how to use his Branch of Sin properly, and becomes one of Ganta's friends after the Carnival Corpse.

Takami Yoh is the brother of Minatsuki. He's the only main character who isn't actually a Deadman, but he's still a good character. He cares rather deeply for Minatsuki, and would do anything to protect her and get her out of prison. I like how this character developed through the series, by getting smarter and learning how to do things easier.

Tsunenaga Tamaki is the first antagonist of Deadman Wonderland, who is the owner of the prison Deadman Wonderland. He likes to experiment on things, and he likes to view things just as a 'game'. I believe he is the one who originally created the Carnival Corpse to get body parts out of Deadmen and to experiment on them. He has an 'okay' development, but it isn't as great as someone like Ganta...

... and finally, Igarashi Ganta, I've mentioned the main-ish characters and just some Deadmen, but here's the good part. Igarashi Ganta starts off as a normal kid, who through some circumstances, has his friends killed, and turns into a Deadman. He starts off rather weak, but throughout the series, he develops a lot and becomes quite strong. Ganta's development is my favourite out of the manga series, and nothing can beat it, in my opinion.

Let's speak about the arcs of the series. The series starts off with the 'Prison' arc which isn't anything special. But, it introduces the characters and it introduces you, yourself to the series. I'd give the Prison arc a 6/10.

The second arc in the series, the Deadman arc, introduces the Carnival Corpse into the series, which makes things a lot more interesting. The Deadman arc is also where you meet Senji, and it's where Ganta has his first win in the Carnival Corpse, quite obviously. I give the Deadman arc a 7/10

The third arc in the series, the Scar Chain arc is one of the bigger arcs. The Scar Chain arc is the arc where Ganta and his friends attempt to escape Deadman Wonderland and kill the undertaker, Genkaku Azuma. Genkaku is a pretty cool character, and other characters are also introduced, and I like each one of them. The arc shows off a couple of abilities from other Deadmen and Ganta gets a bit stronger this arc. I give the Scar Chain arc a 8/10.

The fourth arc in the series, called the Forgeries arc, is quite weird and it's well, weird. Tamaki creates Forgeries and shit, which are like Deadmen with masks that have overwhelming strength. But, Ganta and his friends find someway around it and try to get the masks off of the forgeries, so they can become normal people again. I give the Forgeries arc a 7/10.

The fifth arc in the series is called the Revolt arc. This arc starts off with Tamaki asking Ganta to help him kill the Wretched Egg "Red Man". Ganta refuses and he gets out of the room with Tamaki encountering more Forgeries. Well, he finds a way around the forgeries and gets out of there. After getting outside, Ganta learns who the true Wretched Egg is and the prison gets blown up. I give the arc a 9/10.

The final arc in the series, the Return to Deadman Wonderland arc, is a fantastic arc. It is amazing. I don't have much words to describe the arc. Simply, the characters return to Deadman Wonderland after the events of the Revolt arc to finally put an end to the true founder of Deadman Wonderland, and the Wretched Egg itself. It's quite a ride. I give the arc a 10/10, being my favourite arc in the series. Also the last one.

I enjoyed this series quite a lot, only finishing it in 4 days. I could of finished it quicker, but I had other things to do and I also didn't want to finish it as fast as possible. The series was quite an interesting one, and it has become one of my favourites. But, as I say, favourites do not have to be rated 10. That is one of my rules; my favourites do not have to be rated 10.

Overall, besides rating the last arc 10/10, that doesn't matter, I still give the series a 9/10. This series had it's flaws and it wasn't the best series ever created, but I still love it. It is still in my favourites, and I haven't read much manga. But, this will be in my favourites for a while until I read a bit more manga, and then it might retreat out of my favourites.

This gets 1/10 solely for the art alone.

Why? Let me explain:

Character development is nonexistant, backstories are not enough if the author truly wanted to write solid characters. Plus all of these backstories are incredibly boring and cliche. It seems that the author wanted to write badass characters without giving them any depth.

Action scenes were hard to follow. Seriously, the art is good, but the action and direction can be awful sometimes. Character designs are so so, but when I saw a killer loli with a gothic monk I cringed. Plus again, the author with his designs tries too hard to make everyone look cool and badass.

The story is so random. It seems that the author wrote the story as he went along. Prison guard suddenly became an ex-mercanary badass and prison chief is revealed to be an ex-hikikimori who just wanted revenge against someone who destroyed his PC. The ending was dissappointing since none of the characters were likable at all.

Shonen tropes. OMG, these shonen tropes, sometimes this manga was so stupid that I considered giving it up. It's on the same level as Bleach. In fact it's worse than the first 20 volumes of Bleach which were quite good.

Irrelevant side characters who do not contribute to the plot. i.e Yosuga and Toto Sakagami.

The reason why people rate it so high is because they decided to check the manga after the cliffhanger, so for some it's their first and the only manga they have ever read.

Despite all blood and gore, the quality of this manga is disastrous , however if you are a newcomer this will be a treat for you since you will have much lower standards than me.

I give it SHOUNEN-SHIT SEAL OF DISAPPROVAL.

Want a good shounen?

Read something like Shokugeki no Souma. Personally I found this manga a waste of time and it's dumb, but I won't deny that it's entertaining if you haven't read any manga in your life.

Deadman Wonderland


If you have seen the anime adaptation of this, I recommend reading the manga first and foremost. It's far better than the anime adaptation in any area. Especially since I can also call Deadman Wonderland an elf song on steroids. These two actually have a lot of similarities in terms of characters and plot, the only difference being that both worlds differ in quality. Especially in terms of characters. DW actually had a lot of noteworthy characters, especially those that only came into their own in the manga.


Deadman Wonderland didn't convince me at first, but the further the story went, the more the curiosity and tension built. It undoubtedly has quite an interesting and well-thought-out storyline in terms of narrative and resolution. Towards Chapter 45, however, the manga had waned, the last 13 chapters were weaker than I had hoped.

Unfortunately, the plot armor also increased immensely towards the end. Hardly matched the previous setting when the lives of all characters were massively at stake. And towards the end everyone had so many lives that it was almost funny.

Story

The actual main story begins at something questionable. One generally questions the approach of how the protagonist ended up in prison in the first place and why this is all happening to get the plot rolling. Until the end this is explained excellently how everything relates to each other and how inevitable these events actually were.

Furthermore, the plot has quite subtle background stories. This also triggered conflicts with the respective characters and required various developments.

Drawing/illustration

Of a very high level, provided in detail, representation and especially the perspectives. Among other things, I noticed that the draftsman loved to show the scenes from different perspectives and he succeeded very well. The manga was also very detailed and could hit the atmosphere well.

Characters

The protagonist Ganta is enormously daunting at the beginning but develops subtly in the course of the manga. It is nothing to speak of until the end, but at least has a solid connection to the main storyline.

The protagonist, Shiro, has become an increasingly interesting character by the end, especially because of her background story. To be honest, you could almost feel sorry for the whole thing. And you also understand why this whole story came about in the first place.

The antagonists were mostly hateful and accordingly had such a charisma. They had a background, but I found them less interesting than the other supporting characters or protagonists.

In general, I was very surprised with the characters, even if the melodrama was too exaggerated in some scenes (especially with Ganta).


Conclusion

It's definitely a high-quality manga with big strengths and small weaknesses. From start to finish, the plot was simpler than I expected, but the background and what had happened behind the scenes were much more interesting.

I think you've wasted too much potential in the last few chapters, but it's still above average. Chapters 20-45 were definitely the best here.

Having seen the anime first and enjoying it substantially, I had high hopes for the manga; hopes which were met and with an added surprise of quite a different ending. I highly recommend the manga, or at least the later volumes, to any fan of the anime as the storyline fleshes out the characters' backgrounds; which are not only expanded upon but given far more purpose than the sudden cut-off of the anime finale.
Starting off as sci-fi and action piece, Deadman Wonderland grows into more genres as the volumes continue, and you can almost feel the authors mold their story into something great, each volume building on the Deadman Wonderland world and peaking interest at the conclusion of every chapter.
The art is beautifully done; the action-packed panels are especially aesthetically pleasing despite the sometimes horrifying scene being depicted.
Many characters, although twisted with darkness, are likeable and fascinating even in their evil nature.
With a touch of psychological thrill, horror, action, sci-fi, and even romance; Deadman Wonderland is a manga I never hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for a new world to lose themselves in.

Coming right off of the un-fulfilling conclusion of the anime, I never really had any high hopes for the manga of Deadman Wonderland. I thought it was going to be another "action and gore trip" just like many of the other manga inspired anime’s I had seen in the past. (I'm looking at you Tokyo Ghoul)

So you can imagine my surprise when I actually started to read it.

It really blew me away with just how much the story could go as far as it did, while still at the same time retaining its ultra-grim and dark tones as the show lead it on to be (hell it was probably even darker than the anime)

The manga brought so many twists and turns that I really ended up caring about many of the characters and their overall fates by the conclusion. It has that Berserk (another amazing manga) type feel, where literally anything can happen at any moment, making many parts (especially near the end) a real treat to read.

Now many viewers maybe a little wary of reading this manga because of its "extreme violence" and "anything can happen" subject matter. If I’m being honest, yes, it can be very gruesome at times (Yes even more then the show). But for those who can stomach such things and press on, you will find that this is definitely a manga that is worth reading.

So yes, I definitely recommend this manga for anyone who likes dark and crazy storylines, and a must read for anyone who liked the show. I give it an 8/10.

Deadman Wonderland was something that caught my eye on "AnimeFreak.TV" when I was browsing around out of boredom, and since then it has become one of my personal favorite manga. When I read the basic story plot I felt that this was going to be a typical action/prison type but infact it turned out to be so much more.

Story = The basic Synopsis is as follows: "The story follows Ganta Igarashi when he becomes the last man standing when his class is slaughted by a mysterous floating "Red Man". Left alive Ganta is charged for the murder of his class and is sent to the famous: "Deadman Wonderland" a themepark and prison rolled into one. It's here Ganta meets a mysterous girl with white hair named "Shiro" and the real surivival game in which is life is at stack starts."

The story has many arcs in the main plot that all seem to come together. And opens up to many different stages within their lives at Deadman Wonderland. It is most deffinatly, not borring. Forver trying to keep you on your toes I found myself ever so wanting to read the next chapter. It always seemed to be a mixture of hardship, thriller, action and horror with some rather cute scenes and funny parts. There are even some romance parts between specific parts and as someone who doesn't go much for romance I rather enjoyed these scenes as they fit well into the story and seemed to either fill you with joy or rip you apart.

Art = For one thing, I really liked the art. It never seemed to confuse me [like it happens in some manga's where the art is good but there is too much on one page] and was always clear. However, this manga isn't one for kids and some artwork in the "voilence"/"gore" department was very well done. And this is where some people adivce if you're queasy to avoid this manga. However, I too am queasy but I never got to a point where I wanted to turn away and look back. The story had sucked me in at this point!

Character = There wasn't really a main character in the story of which I didn't like. While the mian character tries to find ground in the story after going through so much, all the other characters have strong personalities that are recognizable and on-going throughout the story which was good to know. Deadman Wonderland ended up having a variaty of characters either giving you a favorite character you most deffinatly loved, or a bunch of them.

Overall it was an enjoyable read and I am currently in the middle of buying the actual manga volumes as they are released and re-reading them! This manga had alot of strong scenes in it that I doubt I'll ever forget. I've known people who have watched the anime and haven't known really what they thought of it. To really enjoy Deadman Wonderland, you need to read the manga. Unfortunatly, the anime cut out alot of characters and plot line, and was canceled after 12 episodes. The manga, is by far better, and a far more enjoyable experience!!

I don't know it feels unfinished, sorta, but that by no means makes it a bad read. It really does have a good background, story and some repetitive flashbacks but the overall story, the fights, the characters are all interesting and the actual story is fresh. Like i first mentioned though the end seems like it wants to continue, but it doesn't. You're left feeling good but slightly empty. I would most definitely recommend reading this, multiple times if you want.

Deadman Wonderland isn't your typical seinen. It has quite its unique distinctions, and is a worthwhile read all right.

Story - 8 :
10 years after a great earthquake that ravaged most of Tokyo, Ganta Igarashi is the only witness of the murder of his entire classroom by a person clad entirely in red. As such, he is framed for the crime and sent in death row, in a prison called Deadman Wonderland that serves as an attraction park ran by the prisoners. His encounter with an albino girl named Shiro will urge him to live on, and discover the mysteries of the prison and of the Red Man.

Yeah, this is a pretty basic premise, isn't it ? But while the initial starting point for the story might hint at a survival manga in a crazy environment, the scenario will quickly focus on battle by introducing special powers and factions inside the prison (no telling there, go read it :p)

Art - 9 :
The art is, truly, splendid. Each character has many little details and quirks, and the style of the artist truly suits the madness of the story. Some double pages are seriously worth the read.

Character - 10 :
And this is where, ladies and gentlemen, Deadman Wonderland really shines.
Very quickly, you'll see that every character, besides the hero, is crazy. Each one has something tied to his past that shapes his attitude in the world of Deadman Wonderland, that you understand when the characters are developed. Ganta is the only sane person in the prison, striving to survive without becoming mad. As such, his character development is exemplary. Shiro is a weird girl, but she wants no matter what to be Ganta's friend, and when they get separated by the ordeals they live,Shiro's pain is heartwrenching.

Enjoyment : 10

I loved this manga, from start to finish. The combat scenes, the powers, the characters, the end of the story... Everything.

Overall : 9
Yes, only 9, because no manga is perfect. (Besides 20th Century Boys, but here lies not the debate :p). But, as you read, Deadman Wonderland is an excellent manga, and if you like gory seinen story (Gantz, Mirai Nikki, Elfen Lied...), you'll like this one.

Plus, it's completed now. You've got no excuses, go read it all at once !

The art is great,the expressions drawn very lively. Simply by looking at their expression,you can practically feel their own emotions wash over you. From smiles to tears,from joy to pain,everything was expressed well. The details of all the gore were clean and crisp,not too messy,but detailed and well drawn out enough to give you the sense of how good it is.

The characters were outstanding,they were amazing. Many of them had special traits,their own particular ups and downs,their own strengths and faults. Even Ganta,the main "hero"-type character,has his own strong weaknesses. And each and every person had their own personality,and it had individuality. There was no "Oh,she's similar to..." and "Wow,it's just like..." in there. No. Everyone in DW are all unique.
When a character is proven cruel,it sticks true to the point and doesn't stray. And you can imagine how great all this individuality is,with the large variety of people who appear in there. By far,one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen.
Their backstories were all unique,and saddening.

This series was very enjoyable. I would sit still for hours reading it,to the point my feet got numb. The sheer mix of story,art and character blew me away. And that is without saying all the twists,turns and surprises. Some parts can be predictable,but that is rare,seeing as DW always has a surprise around every corner,and I cannot stress out enough how many corners there are.
The plot development was beautiful,the character developments entertaining. Their powers and skills and how they used it was wonderful,and the backstories were honestly saddening.
It seems in each chapter,a little more about Deadman Wonderland is explained. They make it like a jigsaw,with at first many scattered pieces and you're wondering how it all got there and why. Chapter by chapter the story is given in bits and pieces,and it's the type of manga that makes you piece all the pieces back together on your own.

Overall,I'd say I wouldn't mind re-reading this at least three to five times. It's entertaining,the cast as well,and it's definitely worth your while.

Deadman Wonderland is one of my favorite manga. I watched the anime first, and even though I really enjoyed it, I was incredibly disappointed by the final episode. I decided to read the manga, hoping it would answer all my questions and tie off every loose end, and I must say that I was impressed.

STORY: 9. A pretty original and well- developed plot with twists and turns. The ending was a bit disappointing, however.

ART: 10. The art is crisp and clean, and very pleasing to the eye. This manga has some of the best visuals I've seen.

CHARACTER: 9. Most of the characters are original and they all have very interesting and intriguing backstories. Other than a couple cliches from time to time, the characters are rather well written.

ENJOYMENT: 10. The action scenes look great, the characters are entertaining, the visuals are beautiful, and every chapter left me wanting more.

I don't think I've enjoyed any manga more than I have this one. While I wouldn't call it a masterpiece (because the ending was still a bit disappointing), it is still one of my favorites and one of the best I have read.

Deadman Wonderland started strong... and then went downhill... like... near the center of earth. Seriously how can anybody ruin such a good idea is beyond me... Sigh... I did wonder if I had to bother finishing this series... but heck I've read more than half the series and unfortunately it doesn't get any better.... So....

Interesting premise completely ruined by the typical shounen tropes... Seriously... The first 4 or so volumes are enjoyable. But then the series veers into a remake of street fighter with philosophical mumbo jumbo, "cool" punch lines, and fake camaraderie. It's overly violent but it doesn't serve the purpose of the story... I'm not even counting the fanservice... Gosh. I mean, I could probably type something more coherent about how the series is a very very BAD shounen by trying too hard to look cool, but my brain has turned to jelly and I just want to rant.

I so wanted to like this.

Likable hero, although typical shounen boy....
HOWEVER...

You've got all the rest. Excluding Shiro who at the point I dropped it, was overly naive... ( I spoiled myself the end and she joins the rest of the group after a while), the rest of the cast is made up of twisted characters who are so intense in everything they do, it just falls flat after a while. In fact... you can practically guess when this or that character is a liar since everything is just so t-y-p-i-c-a-l... and the betrayals therefore are just anticlimactic since you can see them coming from miles away. They all have some typical backstories which are told in a very repetitive shounen-like way - X vs Y, Y aka bad guy wins in the beginning, X on the brink of death remembers his past - enters typical sob story or fucked up story number 83 - then X has a revival thinking about our 14 year-old hero who inspires him for stupid reasons badly introduced and X wins.

Then we also have a contest of punch lines, contest of cool positions/gestures, contest of cool moves and so on...

The bad guys have no believable motivation for their actions. They are completely rotten, and twisted and cruel for sport. Mind you, I've read Tokyo Ghoul and some characters are pretty sick, but even if you don't approve, you come to a certain understanding of where they're coming from... Here though, the few characters who explain their reasons for being trash sound empty because the author was too lazy to give them a proper backstory. Yeah, we're bad guys because.... We hate flowers, and good air, and people living in peace. We want chaos, and violence, and blood and it's your fault you're a goody goody. YEAH. We're bad, because We love EVIL!!! SEE!

The good guy's past are no better.They're all tragic and surrealistic.

A dad who's lost his daughter is crazy because his daughter was a nutcase, another is a professional liar because her mother betrayed her, hence she killed her mom AND her dad, homosexual guy turned transsexual and was imprisoned because he killed the girl his boyfriend was two-timing him with.... Are we seriously supposed to empathize with murderers? If we are, then make sure we can empathize with them with proper buildup,

WHERE IS redemption when all your characters are sick in the head?

You don't need to write whatever appears the most intense to make people relate. The whathefuckery is SO over the top that it just makes you roll your eyeballs after a while.

Worst of all, Likable characters are a scarcity. No truly, I'm trying to remember a manga in which characterization was worse but I can't come up with any. It's just that bad.

Thank the art for the 3. Why are shounens cool? Well, obviously the answer is not to be found in Deadman Wonderland. In fact, I'd say for any aspiring mangaka, this is definitely a good series to read - the things you SHOULD NEVER DO EVER... It pains me to be that harsh because yeah...It takes time to make a manga. I'm just flabbergasted that such a series managed to be published for such a long time. Mind you, again, the beginning is promising, but after volume 5 or so... I found myself struggling. Should I continue or should I stop... Should I? It could have been WAY better, the plot itself offered possibilities to something more complex and enriching but nope... We get the shounen tropes and that's it. Forget everything that made this series interesting in the beginning just let's play streetfighter in a more gory way.

A manga to avoid. Worst shounen I've read so far. I've read boring, bland, flavorless, not-funny-trying-to-be-funny... This one enters the category of the "trying-too-much-to-be-cool-and-so-is-totally-lame" category along with Bleach... except that Bleach for all its fault was way better... Even worse, that one had a better potential than Bleach from the beginning and it managed to be crushed to the ground by its own authors. I'm wondering if they didn't get tired of their own series themselves... They should have done like Yukiru Sugisaki with D.N. Angel... Go on hiatus indefinitely.

Deadman Wonderland, as I've told all my friends, is one of my favorite mangas of all time. I even paid full price, not used, for my favorite volume, #2 because of a certain scene starring Shiro; my favorite character of this comedic tragedy.

Anyways let's get to the point: this manga made me ugly cry and pulled on all my heart strings and made me feel things I forget I can feel. While still being completely kick ass.

Side Notes:
Good inclusiveness, I felt like their was a character for everybody to relate to.
It has an anime adaption that is good, but not as good as the manga because it cuts out one of the most important side characters, and it's only half of the series. I want to see this anime completed too.
